I remember when I first got into affiliate marketing around 2013. I met another marketer on Facebook who introduced me to an opportunity. Back then, I wasn't thinking about building a business or understanding my audience. I wanted to make money. Plain and simple.
And those flashy sales videos? Man, they knew exactly how to get somebody excited! ๐ But once I joined, reality hit. I watched the training, joined hundreds of Facebook groups, and started dropping affiliate links everywhere. Guess how much money I made? A big, fat ZERO.
I Had Information, But No Direction
I didn't understand traffic, funnels, or who I was supposed to be marketing to. Then I discovered that getting more personal coaching meant paying for a higher membership level I couldn't afford. One marketer even told me that if I thought I could build a business without spending money, I had everything twisted. That hit hard. I started wondering whether I was even capable of learning this stuff. But I didn't quit.
What Finally Changed?
Eventually, I connected with coaches Ace and Rich, who helped me see the bigger picture. They taught me about understanding my target audience, generating leads, and building relationships. And let me tell you, I needed that lesson!
I used to approach everybody with my opportunity. Friends, family, even people in Facebook groups that had absolutely nothing to do with business. One woman finally asked me, โDo you know how to shut your marketing off? That doesn't move everyone!โ She had a point. ๐
Through coaching and trial and error, I realized something important: Not everybody is your prospect. And not every conversation needs to become a transaction. I started listening more, asking better questions, and treating people like people instead of potential commissions.
It Was Never Just About Money
Today, I still drive Uber and DoorDash, sometimes working 14-plus hours a day. And you know what financial freedom looks like to me? Having time to cook breakfast without rushing out the door. Visiting friends and family without worrying about losing a day's income. Simply having more control over my time.
That's the lifestyle I'm working toward. And that's why I created The Marketing Growth Hub: to help beginners understand what they're building, why they're building it, and which skills actually matter.
Because sometimes you don't need another opportunity. You need somebody to explain the one you're already trying to understand.
If you're feeling overwhelmed, start by identifying the one part of affiliate marketing you don't understand yet. Learn it, practice it, and build from there. You don't have to figure everything out today.
